Surviving the Coming

Zombie Apocalypse:

Disasters, Catastrophes, and Human Behavior

Surviving the Coming Zombie Apocalypse: Disasters, Catastrophes, and Human Behavior is a large scale immersive experience combining online and in person participatory elements through narrative worldbuilding and social simulation. Created by a collaborative team including Glenn Stutzky, Christopher Irvin, and Keesa Johnson, the project places participants inside a fictional world devastated by a zombie pandemic, where survival, cooperation, and moral decision making drive the experience.

Operating as a participatory simulation rather than a fixed narrative, the project unfolds across digital platforms and physical activations. Participants form Survivor Groups, navigate imagined environments, and confront both external threats and internal social dynamics. Zombies function as a metaphor for societal collapse, allowing the experience to examine collective behavior during crisis.

The project integrated social media platforms including X, Facebook, and YouTube with live events and real time interaction, blurring the boundary between fiction and everyday life. As Art Director, Christopher Irvin led the creative vision and execution, shaping the visual language, narrative systems, and experiential cohesion across both digital and physical contexts.

Surviving the Coming Zombie Apocalypse received national and international media attention, including coverage from ABC, NBC, and Fox, attracted interest from AMC’s The Walking Dead, and earned six Gold and Silver American Advertising Awards for its innovative use of immersive storytelling and participatory design.
